It was in the year 1937 that Bro A I Hart (Snr) started evangelistic open air meetings in Highgate.  Seeing the need and noting the response of the people, he then launched six weeks of Gospel Crusade in the Highgate Market House.

He was ably assisted by other valiant evangelists such as Bro Harold Wildish, Edwin Willie and Syd Calcraft.  It was a very successful venture.  The Lord blessed greatly.  Many people from Highgate and surrounding districts got saved.  Some were baptized at Orange River.

Follow up meetings were convened at Mr Murray’s home.  Happy Hour classes were held on Thursdays where young people responded to the claims of Christ.  It was now evident that a larger meeting place was needed.  This present site was purchased from Mr Phipps and the Hall was erected in 1938.

Among the early converts were Bro Clarence Simms, Sisters Isolyn Pryce, Miriam Daye, Ida Thomas and Daisy Purser.  In the early 40’s many others were added, inclusive of Brothers Francis

Goldson (Snr) and Albert Aris; Sisters Hilda Windross, Iris Hamilton and Ivy Burns (USA).  These, with the exception of Albert Aris and Ivy Burns, have gone home to be with the Lord.

It is not possible to mention all the early believers who have gone to be with the Lord, but we thank God for those stalwarts who committed themselves to the growth of the work.

Under the leadership of A I Hart, Philemon Thompson, Alphanso Bedward and George and Dorcas Douglas, the church grew over the years so that other assemblies were started in Dean Pen, Platfield and Brainard.

Bro Hart received much help in those pioneering days from Bro. Bill Hinds, Bro Bewick and other faithful brethren from other parts of Jamaica and abroad.  In later years, Bro Hart’s son, A I Hart (Jnr) helped in the work when his father was on Furlough or ill.

After the home going of A I Hart, Snr, the work was carried on mainly by Bros George Douglas and Alphanso Bedward.  With the growth of the meeting, it was necessary to enlarge the first building in the 1960’s.

After some of the leadership was transferred to other areas, Bro Charles Hart began to wear the mantle of his late father.  With formation of the North-Eastern Missionary Conference, it became necessary to erect this present Hall.  It was Bro Charles Hart who, under God’s guidance, initiated this project.

Thanks be to God and His grace, the work is still going on under the pastoral care of Bro Francis Goldson (Jnr), Lloyd Purser and Albert Henry, and Deacons Albert Aris, Clifford Lindo, Oscar Simmonds and Paul Hemmings (Snr).

We are also appreciative of the faithful work of Bro Lance Henry (now full-time worker), Bro Collin Binning (retired fulltime worker), Leebert Grant (past Elder), Bro Ashley Smith (full-time worker) and Bro Hopeton Dobson (past Elder and Fulltime worker).

We praise God for those who heeded God’s call to minister in distant lands.  Special tribute must be given to Sis Gloria Amritt who now labours in Columbia and Bro George Beckford (now deceased) who labored for many years in Bolivia.  Today we give all glory and praise to God for the witness that raised up 55 years ago.  At present the fellowship numbers 95.  it is our desire to be faithful in the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world and in the edification of the saints.  Our future confidence rests in

Philippians 1:6, “being confident of this very thing that He who hath begun a good work will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
